Even before 9/11, utility companies faced daunting security threats. For, as long as there have been electrical stations and wastewater plants, there’s also been opposition, extreme weather and simple human curiosity.
“With the electricity sector, it’s like lightning, like controlled lightning. And we want to make sure people are properly protected — more from themselves than from anybody else,” says Scott Yost, senior manager of security and contingency at Edmonton, Alta.-based EPCOR Utilities.

Conjure up the traditional image of a security guard — stony face, gruff manner, cryptic response — and you have an intimidating type.
But it’s an image that’s quickly fading as security companies realize that training guards to handcuff a suspect is no longer enough. Clients expect more than expertise in technical skills; they want guards trained in a range of interpersonal skills, from good communication to handling conflict. And training in soft skills is not just for guards. Now the IT and legal staff also must know how to better deal with people.
